About the author: Alex Mercer has traded currencies for over 10 years, building most of his intraday routine around the London–New York window. He investigates liquidity, spreads, and timing traps, and writes to help traders find the hours that genuinely matter.
Ask when to trade forex, and most experienced traders will point to the same few hours. The London New York session overlap time is when the world's two biggest FX centres are open together, and it's when much of the day's real business gets done.
The short answer: 8:00 am to 12:00 pm New York time, which is 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm London time for most of the year.
But "most of the year" matters. Daylight saving shifts the overlap twice a year, and for a few weeks it stretches to five hours. This guide gives you exact dates, times for 16 cities, real volume data, what happens minute by minute, and how to trade the window.

The Quick Answer
The London–New York overlap runs from the New York open until the London close.
Standard Overlap Times
| Reference | Overlap |
|---|---|
| New York time | 8:00 am – 12:00 pm |
| London time | 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm |
| UTC (UK winter / US winter) | 13:00 – 17:00 |
| UTC (UK summer / US summer) | 12:00 – 16:00 |
How the Window Is Defined
The overlap depends on two conventions:
- New York session start: usually 8:00 am New York time, when US dealing desks are fully staffed.
- London session end: usually 5:00 pm London time, though some sources use 4:00 pm.
Using the 4:00 pm London close shortens the overlap by an hour. That's why some guides quote three hours and others four. This guide uses the more common 5:00 pm convention, but note that liquidity often starts to thin after the 4:00 pm London fix.
Why New York Time Is the Best Anchor
The overlap's start is tied to New York. Its end is tied to London. Because the two cities change their clocks on different dates, any single fixed time (like "13:00–17:00 GMT") is wrong for part of the year.
The safest approach: remember 8:00 am New York time as the start, and check what that means in your local time each week around clock changes.
Why It's the Busiest Window
London and New York together host the majority of global FX dealing. When both are open, liquidity is deepest and spreads are typically tightest. Our broader guide to forex market hours (update link once published) explains all four sessions.
Global FX turnover averaged $9.6 trillion per day in April 2025, according to the Bank for International Settlements (BIS, 2025a).
Takeaway: The London New York session overlap time is usually 8:00 am to 12:00 pm New York time, which is 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm London time for most of the year.
The 2026–2027 Overlap Calendar
None of the top-ranking pages show how the overlap actually shifts through the year. Here's the full calendar, calculated from official daylight saving rules.

Why the Mismatch Weeks Happen
The US moves its clocks on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November. The UK and EU move on the last Sunday in March and October. During the gaps, New York is only four hours behind London instead of five, so the overlap starts an hour earlier in London and runs for five hours.
What Changes in Mismatch Weeks
- US data at 8:30 am New York time lands at 12:30 London, not 13:30.
- FOMC statements at 2:00 pm New York time land at 18:00 London, not 19:00.
- The overlap begins at 12:00 London.
The next mismatch week is 25–31 October 2026, and both the Federal Reserve (27–28 October) and the ECB (29 October) meet during it (Federal Reserve, n.d.).
Daylight saving dates were verified against the IANA time zone database. The US National Institute of Standards and Technology explains the US rules (NIST, n.d.).
Takeaway: The overlap lasts four hours for most of the year but stretches to five during the spring and autumn mismatch weeks, when it starts at 12:00 London time.

Calculated using the IANA time zone database. Cities without daylight saving keep the same local clock, so the overlap shifts against them when London or New York changes.
How to Read This Table
- Cities without daylight saving (such as Dubai, Mumbai, Singapore, and Tokyo) see the overlap move one hour earlier in summer.
- Southern Hemisphere cities (such as Sydney) shift the other way, because their summer is the Northern winter.
- Mismatch weeks start an hour earlier everywhere relative to London-based schedules.
Practical Tips by Region
- Europe and Africa: the overlap fits an afternoon routine.
- Middle East and South Asia: the overlap falls in the evening, ideal after work.
- Southeast and East Asia: late evening to past midnight; consider the London open instead if sleep matters.
- Australia: overnight; most traders focus on the Asian or European morning instead.
- Americas: early morning, often before or at the start of the workday.
Our guide to the best time to trade EUR/USD (update link once published) applies these windows to the most popular pair.
Takeaway: Use the city table to find your local overlap, and remember that it moves an hour twice a year if your country doesn't follow the US and UK clock changes.
Why the Overlap Matters: The Data
BabyPips and others claim the overlap accounts for "about 70%" of forex volume, without a source. Here's what verifiable data shows.
Where FX Trading Happens
The 2025 BIS Triennial Survey found that the United Kingdom accounted for about 38% of global FX trading and the United States about 19% (BIS, 2025b). When London and New York are both open, more than half of global dealing capacity is active.
Volume by Half-Hour
OANDA analysed its own 2024 trading data across six major pairs, more than 70,000 data points, measuring average half-hourly volume as a share of the daily total (Norman, n.d.). It found:
- The London–New York overlap covered about 19% of the trading day but about 37% of daily volume.
- The single busiest half-hour was 8:30–9:00 am New York time, with about 7% of daily volume in just 2% of the day.
- Volume was typically lowest between 5:00 and 6:00 pm New York time, around the daily rollover.
That's a broker's own client data, measured in US-centric terms, so it's not the whole market. But it's real, dated, and methodical, and it suggests the overlap carries roughly twice its "fair share" of activity, not 70% of the total.
Why the 8:30 am Spike
Many major US economic releases, including jobs and inflation data, land at 8:30 am New York time. That's the moment when the overlap's liquidity meets its biggest scheduled catalyst.
What This Means for You
- Tighter spreads are more likely during the overlap than at most other times.
- Bigger moves are more likely, especially around US data.
- Follow-through tends to be stronger, because more participants are active.
The CFTC reminds retail traders that forex "is not the place to put any money that you cannot afford to lose" (CFTC, n.d.). Higher activity cuts both ways.
Takeaway: OANDA's 2024 data shows the overlap carries about 37% of daily volume in about 19% of the day, which is far more than average but well below the unsourced "70%" claim.
Inside the Overlap: Minute by Minute
The overlap isn't one uniform block. Several scheduled moments shape it.
A Typical Overlap (New York Time)
| Time (NY) | Time (London) | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 8:00 am | 1:00 pm | New York desks fully active; overlap begins |
| 8:30 am | 1:30 pm | Major US data releases (jobs, inflation, retail sales) |
| 9:30 am | 2:30 pm | US stock market opens; risk sentiment can shift |
| 10:00 am | 3:00 pm | Further US data (e.g., confidence, housing, ISM on some days) |
| 11:00 am | 4:00 pm | London 4 pm fix (WM/Reuters benchmark) |
| 12:00 pm | 5:00 pm | London desks wind down; overlap ends |
Times shift by an hour in London during mismatch weeks.
The London 4 pm Fix
The fix is one of the most important moments of the overlap. Index funds and corporates use these benchmark rates to value portfolios and execute currency hedges, so large orders often cluster around it.
Guy Debelle, then Assistant Governor (Financial Markets) at the Reserve Bank of Australia, explained that index-tracking currency trades tend to "occur during the London 4pm fixing window to minimise the tracking error." He also noted that "WM widened their calculation window from one minute to five minutes" after benchmark reforms (Debelle, 2015).
For traders, that means sharp, sometimes directionless moves around 3:55–4:05 pm London time, especially at month-end.
After the Fix
Once the fix passes and London desks start to leave, liquidity often fades. Many traders treat 4:00 pm London as the practical end of the overlap, even if the formal session runs to 5:00 pm.
Central Bank Days
On FOMC days, the statement typically lands at 2:00 pm New York time, after the overlap ends. On ECB days, the decision lands at 14:15 CET, before New York opens. Both can set the tone for the overlap that follows or precedes them. Our guide to candlestick patterns in forex (update link once published) explains why news-driven candles need extra caution.
Takeaway: Inside the overlap, 8:30 am New York data and the 4 pm London fix are the two key moments, and liquidity often fades after the fix.
Best Pairs and Instruments for the Overlap
Not every pair benefits equally from the overlap. Pairs with heavy US and European involvement benefit most.
Overlap Share of Daily Volume by Pair
OANDA's 2024 analysis found these shares of each pair's daily volume during the London–New York overlap (Norman, n.d.):
| Pair | Share of daily volume in overlap |
|---|---|
| USD/CAD | 45% |
| EUR/USD | 41% |
| GBP/USD | 38% |
| AUD/USD | 34% |
| NZD/USD | 32% |
| USD/JPY | 30% |
What This Tells You
- USD/CAD is the most overlap-heavy, partly because Canadian data and oil-market activity fall in North American hours.
- EUR/USD and GBP/USD combine European and US participation, making the overlap their prime window.
- USD/JPY, AUD/USD, and NZD/USD spread their activity more evenly, with meaningful Asian-session volume.
Other Instruments
- Gold (XAUUSD): often very active during the overlap, especially around US data. Our guide on how to calculate pip value for XAUUSD (update link once published) explains how to size gold trades.
- USD/CHF: follows European and US flows closely.
- US stock indices: active from the 9:30 am New York open.
Pairs to Treat Carefully
- Exotic pairs may still have wide spreads, even during the overlap.
- Asian crosses (such as AUD/JPY) may be more active in the Asian session.
Choosing Your Overlap Pairs
- Pick two or three pairs with high overlap share.
- Learn how each reacts to US data.
- Avoid correlated duplicates (for example, long EUR/USD and long GBP/USD at once).
Our guide to currency pairs (update link once published) explains correlations in detail.
Takeaway: USD/CAD, EUR/USD, and GBP/USD show the highest overlap share of daily volume in OANDA's data, making them natural choices for this window.
My Overlap Routine and the Lesson Behind It
Editor's note: This anecdote is written in the Alex Mercer persona. Replace it with a real experience if available.
For years, I traded whenever I had a free hour. Then I narrowed everything down to the London–New York window, and one mistake taught me why the details matter.
The Mistake
It was the third week of March, a few years ago. I was based in Europe and had a firm routine: prepare at 1:00 pm London, trade from 1:30 pm after the US data.
That week, the US had already changed its clocks, but the UK hadn't. US data hit at 12:30 pm London. I was still preparing. I'd placed a pending breakout order the night before, which triggered on the data spike and reversed within minutes. My stop was hit before I'd even sat down.
What I Changed
- I anchor everything to New York time. My calendar converts it automatically.
- I mark every mismatch week in my diary at the start of each year.
- I cancel pending orders placed overnight if a major release is due before I'm at my desk.
My Current Routine (London Time, Standard Weeks)
- 12:30 pm: review the calendar, mark key levels, check for mismatch weeks.
- 1:00 pm: overlap begins; watch price action, no trades yet.
- 1:30 pm: US data; wait for the initial spike to settle.
- 1:45–3:45 pm: main trading window.
- 3:55–4:05 pm: stay flat around the fix unless already in a trade with room.
- 4:15 pm: review, journal, and stop.
The Result
Concentrating on the overlap, and respecting its internal timing, cut my trade count and costs while improving the quality of my entries. Our honest forex guide for beginners covers how to build routines like this around a job.
The FCA's research on trading apps warns that features such as push notifications can encourage riskier trading behaviour (FCA, 2022). A fixed routine helps resist that pull.
Takeaway: A mismatch week showed me that the overlap's timing shifts, so I now anchor to New York time, mark every mismatch week, and follow a fixed overlap routine.
How to Trade the Overlap, and Its Risks
The overlap offers the best liquidity of the day, but it isn't automatically profitable. Here's how to use it well.
Common Overlap Approaches
- Breakout continuation: trading breaks of the London morning range once New York joins.
- News reaction: waiting for the 8:30 am spike to settle, then trading the direction that holds.
- Trend joining: entering pullbacks within a trend established in the London session.
- Fix fade: cautiously trading reversals after the 4 pm fix (advanced and risky).
Structured methods such as order block trading and ICT concepts often treat the New York open as a key timing window.
Risks Specific to the Overlap
- News spikes: spreads can widen sharply for seconds, and stops may fill at worse prices.
- Whipsaws: first reactions to data often reverse.
- Overtrading: high activity tempts traders to take marginal setups.
- Fix volatility: brief, directionless moves around 4 pm London.
- Holiday overlaps: if either the UK or US is on holiday, the overlap is thin.
Risk Management Essentials
- Risk 1% or less per trade.
- Size from your stop distance, not from a fixed lot.
- Avoid opening new trades in the minutes before major data unless that's your strategy.
- Set a maximum number of trades for the window.
The Bigger Picture
European regulators found that 74% to 89% of retail CFD accounts typically lose money (ESMA, 2018). The overlap improves conditions, not odds. Discipline still decides outcomes.
If automated tools tempt you to trade the overlap while you're away, read what a decade of testing taught me about AI trading and bots. And for the mechanics behind every trade, see how forex trading works.
Takeaway: Use the overlap for breakouts, news reactions, or trend entries, but manage its specific risks with fixed position sizing, pre-news caution, and a trade limit.
Final Thoughts
The London New York session overlap time is 8:00 am to 12:00 pm New York time, which is 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm London time for most of the year. During the spring and autumn mismatch weeks, it starts an hour earlier in London and stretches to five hours.
Real data shows the window carries roughly twice its share of daily volume, not the 70% often claimed, with the busiest half-hour at 8:30 am New York time. Use the calendar and city tables to find your local window, respect the 8:30 am data and 4 pm fix, and choose pairs with a high overlap share. Then let discipline, not just timing, do the rest.

Fact-Checking Note
This article was fact-checked on 18 October 2026. Overlap calendars and city times were calculated using the IANA time zone database for 2026 and 2027. FX location data comes from the BIS Triennial Survey (September 2025). Volume-by-hour data comes from OANDA's analysis of its own 2024 trading data across six pairs and reflects one broker's clients, not the whole market. The Guy Debelle quotes come from his November 2015 speech published by the BIS. FOMC dates come from the Federal Reserve's calendar. The overlap uses the common 8:00 am New York start and 5:00 pm London end; some sources use a 4:00 pm London end. The personal anecdote is written in the author persona.
Risk Disclaimer
Trading foreign exchange and CFDs on margin carries a high level of risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Leverage can work against you as well as for you, and you may lose some or all of your invested capital. Higher liquidity during the overlap does not guarantee profits; spreads can widen and prices can gap around news. PART 5: FAQ (for FAQPage Schema)
1. What time is the London New York session overlap? Usually 8:00 am to 12:00 pm New York time, which is 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm London time. In UTC, it's 13:00–17:00 in winter and 12:00–16:00 in summer.
2. Does the overlap change with daylight saving? Yes. The US and UK change clocks on different dates. During the mismatch weeks (8–28 March and 25–31 October 2026), the overlap runs 12:00–17:00 London time, five hours instead of four.
3. How much forex volume happens during the overlap? OANDA's 2024 data found the overlap covered about 19% of the trading day but about 37% of daily volume. The often-quoted "70%" figure isn't supported by a cited source.
4. Which currency pairs are best during the London–New York overlap? In OANDA's data, USD/CAD (45%), EUR/USD (41%), and GBP/USD (38%) had the highest shares of daily volume during the overlap. Gold is also very active in this window.
5. What is the busiest time within the overlap? OANDA found the 8:30–9:00 am New York half-hour carried about 7% of daily volume, driven by major US data releases at 8:30 am.
PART 6: TLDR Summary
